I finally looked in the mirror
Saúl Balagura
after so many years
of looking at sunsets
and sniffing the breezes
for news from somewhere
I finally dare to look
Oh God!
a thousand nights of agony
a thousand days of fear
hunger so deep that felt
like an aching tumor pain
my flesh washed by the seashore
along with pieces of wrecked
families and friends
and seagulls circling in vain
And on the calmed waters
of mercurial glass
I saw my image
wearing a hat
a striped hat
and I touched my head
and had no hat
and I cried
I cried for I knew then
that we all wear hats . . .
