The dust had settled
long before she saw it
lying by the calciferous road.
The Sun had lost another battle
against the clouds fed
by so many
of them.
It was a war that would be fought
tomorrow as well
–there were plenty of children
and mothers still left.

She prayed that no other set
of eyes had seen
that potato as well
and for once thanked God
that those close by
–that had been her friends—
were already dead.
