How many times have I seen you?
How many times did I see you
when the day was dying down
and there was still light
to watch the sky
void of birds and angels?
So much has happened since then,
so many faces have been lost
to the erosion of time,
that I don’t recall clearly,
if it was you or I that I saw
that afternoon
sitting by the edge of the barrack
watching the dirt move
as a gentle breeze shifted
from north to south,
retrieving for a moment
the smoke and ash
that constantly hovered
over every thing we saw and breathed
like constant drizzle
painted gold by the dying sun.
Was it you or I that died
on that following morning?
How can I remember after so many years?
