Waiting in the Afternoon

 Memories of hills
dressed in verdant promises
of years to come,
of late summer sunsets
awakening the fragrance
of ripe fruit,
of friends with whom I played
just moments before and
a thousand years ago,
this is how I spend
my afternoons,
covered with a blanket
that cannot give warmth
to my chilling bones,
afraid to look into a
mirror of stagnant water
to an image I may not recognize,
waiting for I don’t know how long.
